Hemochromatosis - The Disorder That Causes Excess Iron Within the Body

Diabetes Sugar Levels :

"Hemochromatosis" or "Hhc" is a condition that causes immoderate levels of iron to build up within the blood stream and due to the fact that the human body is not capable through natural processes to rid itself of excess iron, this iron continues to build overtime causing damage to the major organs of the body - particularly the liver, pancreas, and heart - and can be a fatal condition if it is left untreated.

Hemochromatosis is one of the most generally diagnosed genetic (inherited) disorders within the United States today and typically affects individuals who are Caucasian and of Northern European descent.

Hemochromatosis is primarily caused by a defective gene that is inherited by both parents. Typically, when an individual inherits this gene from only one parent they will not organize this disorder but are still capable of carrying this disorder and passing it on to their children.

This gene causes the body to digest an above normal or immoderate level of iron from foods that are consumed causing the iron levels of the body to rise over time as the human body is incapable of disposing of this excess iron. Many individuals remain asymptomatic - meaning that they have no symptoms of this disease - and do not realize that they suffer from this condition until they are diagnosed.

When symptoms from hemochromatosis do occur, the most base complaint among the sufferer is the pain they perceive within their joints. As the iron level in the blood continues to rise, other symptom more serious symptoms may begin to organize that include:

• The pancreas may come to be damaged due to the immoderate levels of iron causing a reduction in the estimate of insulin that is produced development the level of blood sugar to rise within the body rise and the improvement of diabetes can occur.
• An individual may also organize arthritis that causes a great deal of pain.
• Heart irregularities may also be experienced such as an irregular heartbeat or congestive heart failure.
• The liver is generally affected by this condition and it may come to be enlarged, organize the condition of cirrhosis, cancer, and maybe liver failure.
• Women may go through menopause earlier than is normal with this condtition.
• Loss of sexual drive or impotency is also a base complaint for patients with Hhc.
• Changes in the color of the skin may also be experienced and can make the skin appear to be a reddish- bronze or ashen gray-green.
• Thyroid deficiencies may also be a symptom of Hhc and damage to the adrenal glands can also occur.

Treatment of hemochromatosis typically consists of phlebotomy that is the process in which blood transfusions are given to the patient with blood that is donated through a blood bank. A pint of blood will be transfused into the patient once or twice within a week and the distance of time is typically based upon the severity of the "iron overload" and can be for some months or may take up to one year or longer.

When hemochromatosis is caught in the early stages before any damage to the organs occur, it can be treated successfully and prevent serious complications.
