November 21, 2004 on Cbs, 60 Minutes aired a program about Hoodia Gordonii and for the first time many habitancy were introduced to what has been reported as a "Weight Loss Miracle".
But who can riposte this interrogate without a "maybe" in there somewhere?
What are the side effects of Hoodia Gordoni?
Well... You'll have problem seeing anything willing to admit that Hoodia has any side effects at all. In fact, there's a dearth of published studies on the impact of Hoodia on humans.
Yes, I hear that the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert of Africa have been eating Hoodia for millennia. It appears that the San Bushmen depended on hoodia to deal with their hunger and thirst while searching for food. It is claimed that the appetite suppressant found in Hoodia permitted the San Bushmen to feel full while not digesting any food for periods of 24 hours and more.
At times of the year when historically food was scarce the bushmen would ingest the stems of the plant before heading out on the hunt. But it seems to me that this is hearsay evidence only; does this certify that Hoodia will be without risk for us in North America with our rich diets and low levels of exercise?
And what about trials to monitor potential side effects, drug interactions, and normal protection concerns?
"Dr. Jasjit S. Bindra, PhD performed research on Hoodia for Pfizer where he was employed. Pfizer is one of the pharmaceutical giants. They licensed the possession to develop hoodia for million but later returned the rights.
In a letter to The New York Times, Dr Bindra stated that although Hoodia did appear to suppress appetite, there were indications of unwanted effects on the liver caused by components other than the active ingredient p57 that could not de facto be removed while processing. He added, "Clearly, Hoodia has a long way to go before it can earn approval from the Food and Drug Administration."
Does Hoodia influence liver function? Does it interact with other medications a person is taking? It seems pretty unlikely that the San Bushmen were taking pills for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, depression, and other diseases... But we do!
It appears there are a lot of questions that still await definitive answers.
There are safer, natural ways to lose weight without having to deal with hunger cravings. The big "demon" in the way of all weight loss programs is that craving for carbohydrates and sugar... Especially at night after dinner.
